Celebrate Kuranda's History
with Trivia Night

Here come the Hippies!

In the 1960’s and 70’s, the laid-back atmosphere, natural beauty, and agreeable climate of Kuranda attracted hippies seeking an alternative lifestyle.  These individuals, drawn to the rainforest setting, aimed to live simply and self-sufficiently, establishing communes.  Artists and musicians also joined this influx, contributing to Kuranda's unique cultural blend.

However, this "hippy invasion" wasn't without its challenges.  The influx of alternative lifestyles caused anxiety among local media, the council, police, and the public.  Internal divisions within the hippy community, coupled with increased pressure from authorities, eventually led to a decline in Kuranda's prominence within the broader Australian counter-culture movement.

The Kuranda experience today reflects this rich and complex history, blending its past with its present-day cosmopolitan atmosphere.
